Her insights and concrete steps for achieving diversity, inclusion, and sustainability within this digital frontier are both eye-opening and inspiring.

Introduction: The video commences with a warm introduction by the host, Angelica, who highlights Dr. Lisa Coleman's remarkable background and her role in advocating for inclusivity, diversity, and acceptance. Dr. Lisa's extensive experience across various sectors, including higher education, technology, and corporate industries, sets the stage for a captivating discussion.

Setting the Agenda: Dr. Lisa underlines the urgency of addressing global challenges within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing that we have only eight years to drive meaningful change. She lays out the agenda for the discussion, which revolves around fostering inclusive partnerships, inclusive leadership, and her ten concrete steps for embedding diversity and inclusion into the Metaverse's practices.

Inclusive Leadership in the Global Context: Dr. Lisa delves into the concept of inclusive leadership within the global leadership ecosystem. She begins by stressing the importance of design thinking, starting with empathy, and shares examples of leaders, like Jacinda Ardern, who have harnessed empathy to achieve remarkable outcomes.

Embracing the "New Different": She challenges the notion of returning to a "new normal," asserting that the previous normal was fraught with inequalities and challenges. 1. Partnerships: Encourage collaborations like Facebook's partnership with Howard University to diversify inputs.

  2. Cultivating Diverse Talent: Foster both entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship to cultivate diverse talent within organizations.

  3. Language Inclusion: Address language barriers to ensure inclusivity in a multilingual Metaverse.

  4. Global Integration: Tap into global talent and avoid Eurocentric approaches.

  5. Access to Meaning Makers: Ensure diversity in the Metaverse's ecosystem, including content creators.

  6. Self-expression and Identity: Embrace intersectionality and reimagine avatars.

  7. Research and Development: Invest in research and development that reflects diverse perspectives.

  8. Government Partnerships: Collaborate with governments to tap into generational talent.

  9. Leadership Development: Invest in emerging leaders and C-suite education for sustainable growth.

  10. Transdisciplinary Engagement: Foster trans-generational collaboration to harness the digital native expertise of younger generations.

Inclusivity Initiatives at NYU: Dr. Lisa shares concrete examples from NYU, such as the NYU Be Together initiative, where data informs the creation of 42 incubation groups, spanning generations, to generate innovative ideas.

Final Considerations: Angelica reflects on the importance of addressing the digital divide, especially in regions affected by crises. She praises Dr. Lisa for her dedication to building an inclusive and diverse global future.

Introduction

Angelica Sharygina
Ladies, & gentlemen, I'm excited to welcome you to the very first-world higher education ranking Centre. Today we are discussing the incredibly important topic, our global futures from the day we come to the Metaverse, I am honored because I'm interviewing, actually not interviewing Professor Lisa, Doctor Lisa Coleman. She's giving a keynote speech today, I'm excited to introduce her because she is a visionary. And she is the person that is creating change in her world. And through a change in her world. She's creating global change. And it's amazing to have you here. Doctor Lisa, where are you joining us from?

Prof Lisa
I'm in New York today. I just flew back actually from California here in the United States, so the other side of the country by a six-hour flight. And so now I'm back in the back at NYU.

Angelica Sharygina
Excellent. Let me tell our audience a little bit about yourself because your background is so amazing and interesting. And I believe that today's keynote will be extremely interesting for everyone because today we are going to talk about inclusive partnership, inclusive leadership, and Doctor Lisa Coleman will talk about 10 concrete steps on how to include diversity and inclusion in practices in Metaverse. And Doctor Lisa, if you allow me I would love to tell our audience a little bit about yourself. Doctor Lisa is the inaugural Senior Vice President for Global Inclusion and strategic innovation at New York University. What is more, she is faculty at Stern School of Business. A Doctor Lisa is starting to do her C-level executive Ward advisor. She's a highly experienced professional with a demonstrated history of working across sectors including higher education, governmental tech, corporate industries, and areas of her interest. And research includes innovation, DI technology, strategic organizational assessment, research, fundraising, and program development. And it's a great pleasure to have you at West Conference. Doctor Lisa, you're truly inspiring, empowering, changing, and advocating for inclusivity diversity, and acceptance, so that no one is left behind.

And this is the agenda that we are going to talk about. Because today we know that the framework of UN Sustainable Development Goals, we have only eight years to make this change happen. And eight years is not such a long time, if you look at this, and I would be honored to give you a floor with your keynote presentation.

Prof Lisa
Thank you so much, Angelica, thank you for that wonderful introduction. It is a pleasure to be here. Congratulations to all of the conference organizers. I know it takes a lot to get this together. And I am just thrilled to be with you all today. As you mentioned, I'm going to talk a little bit about our global future from the dairy farm to the Metaverse, which I use as that metaphor. And I'll talk a little bit about that metaphor and talk a little bit about leadership. And as you mentioned, I work at NYU, say this about New York University. We have campuses in Abu Dhabi, we have campuses in Shanghai. And then we have about 13 campuses across the world, including places in Europe, like Paris and Berlin, and also in Sydney and Ghana.
Your current goal is to explore the in-depth the intersection [phonetic 03:24] field between Human Rights Protection and Tech Innovation. This is very interesting. And I'm really looking forward to hearing what you have to say Kristiana, Where are you joining us from?

Inclusive leadership in the global leadership ecosystems

Prof Lisa
So, as I think about my work and the work that we do, I'm interested in thinking about how we think about global leadership as we move forward. And so thinking about inclusive leadership in the global leadership ecosystems, and how we create ecosystems of equity. And so first, what I like to talk about is we need to begin with design thinking. We know a lot of organizations out there use design thinking in their practices. So, the first step is to embed that and to embed design thinking means to start with empathy. We've seen some of the greatest leaders even during COVID and other eras, such as Jacinda, and Arden out of New Zealand, really lean into empathy to then create better outcomes. Well, we also know as you mentioned, when we think about the sustainable goals, we only have eight years and eight years is a very short time to accomplish what we're going to need to do Okay, so what I like to say is, everybody keeps saying we're going to go back to the new normal. And I say the normal wasn't so great we had all kinds of inequities, and we had all kinds of challenges. We're seeing some of those challenges even as with things, we experience the challenges in Ukraine today.

New Different

Prof Lisa
So, let's think about something different. So instead of the new normal, I'm suggesting we go to the new different, I have an article about this, it's called the new different, and so that we move into new spaces. What I think the new difference will look like is to address issues like this. Only 24% of gamers are women. So, if we think about the gaming industry, in the creation of new realities in that gaming industry, we have to have the right inputs. And we need the right inputs across gender, right across race, across the nation across the globe. And we also have to think about the digital divide. We also know that there is a great digital divide globally, so many people's access to these resources. And so how do we think about creating equity fields, I always say if we can go to Mars, we can think about right figuring out equity in these spaces, and closing those global gaps, particularly as we think about the Centricity of the Western world in gaming and the Metaverse. So, to also think about how do we bring global conversations in? And then also, lastly, how do we think about this intersection between sustainability and disruption? If we're thinking about sustainable goals, we know they're interconnected, from poverty to gender issues, to water issues, etc. These are interconnected issues.

Equity and interconnection interconnectedness

Prof Lisa
And so, we're going to have to think about equity and interconnection interconnectedness. So, part of the reason I said from the dairy farm to the Metaverse is we know that we have moved from the Industrial Revolution, for instance, to the information revolution, and we're in the middle of the knowledge, imagination, collaboration, and creation, right sort of revolutions, knowledge, and creation and innovation is where we are. And we also know that what's key to that, and there's been a lot of research around this is collaboration. We need collaboration across government, sectors, industry sectors, and higher education. If we're going to solve big problems, we need big partnerships. And now I'm going to talk a little bit about those 10 steps that you've mentioned if we think about inclusivity. So, I spend a lot of time, a lot of time thinking about innovation. I'm really into gaming and thinking about parallel universes. I watch Ready Player One and all the great movies out there that explore the Metaverse. And so, as we think about that, and the emerging, we know this is billions and billions of dollars economy in the future, as we think about the rest of the 21st and the 22nd century, some 54 billion to 180 billion.

Metaverse and inclusion

That's what we're talking about in the next 25 to 30 years in this industry. So, we think about the Metaverse and think about inclusion, as I mentioned, right, we have digital quick digital divides, we have only 24% of women contributing to gaming. And we have to think about sustainability and disruption. So first, think about partnerships. I've been excited by things like Facebook partnering with Howard University here in the United States and a historically black institution think about right, how do you think about the inputs into gaming, we partnered with Zoom, for instance, as part of the reason you're able to put your pronouns into Zoom is we get because NYU partnered with Zoom, and now you're able to utilize that tool to do so. So, partnerships, partnerships. Number two, diverse talent, cultivating diverse talent across the AI space.

Entrepreneurship

Prof Lisa
This will include intrapreneurship, as well as entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is creating new investors etc. But what I also say in companies and organizations, we have to create intrapreneurship opportunities for emerging generations within our organizations to explore new ideas, new identities. Third language barriers. We know there are all kinds of language barriers. So, as we're creating this Metaverse, how are we bringing people from Germany, who speaks German and picking up people from India who speak Urdu, we have to think about our inputs and the language inputs and the play back and forth. Because language barriers in this Metaverse will create exclusions if we don't think about the inclusion in the very beginning, global integration already sort of alluded to this, really thinking about global input. I said this in another panel. I was in retreat recently. And I watched little kids take recycled computer parts and build new computers. And if we can really think about that global talent, and really tapping into that global talent and integrating it and not just having a Western or Eurocentric approach as we create the Metaverse that will also allow us to think about inclusion. Number five is access to, so access to meaning makers, creators, producers, etc.

Metaverse is diverse

Prof Lisa
So, making sure that the ecosystem of the Metaverse is diverse. Across all areas, not just the output. A lot of the conversations today are about the output, meaning the games that are produced, or the films or the technologies, but also who's doing that production. Self-expression, and identity. So, we think about the avatars, we got to think about those avatars. And I say all the time. Intersectionality is the thing of the day. So, we have to make sure that our advertisers are intersectional and that they reimagined spaces in all kinds of new ways. Research and development, making sure we have the right research and development inputs, r&d, r&d all day. Government partnerships. I talked about industry partnerships earlier. But number eight is government partnerships. As I mentioned here at NYU, we have partnerships in Abu Dhabi, Shanghai, etc. One of the partnerships I'm working on right now, here in New York, is what our federal organization is thinking about creating cyber academies for emerging generations, meaning high schoolers, middle schoolers, etc.

Working with governments

Prof Lisa
So how are we partnering with governments to make sure that we're tapping into that generational talent, and particularly right, working with governments to make sure that we're tapping into the full breadth of talent development, leadership development is number nine? And leadership development means working with leaders, as Angelica mentioned, I have the opportunity to work with C suite, individuals, I teach in our Stern School of Business, and thinking about that education of leadership development, and emerging leaders in particular. And then lastly, of course, thinking about this ecosystem, and employing Transdisciplinary. And trans-generational, I have to say, as someone who's getting older by the day, I think about emerging generations, and I said this before if you don't have a 10-year-old mentor here, you're already not doing what you should be, should be thinking about doing. 10-year-olds today are digital natives in a way that 20-year-olds or even 30-year-olds were not. And so really thinking about the emergence of that of the digital markets, and the Metaverse, we need to be working with those younger generations.

LGBTQ plus work in the Metaverse

Prof Lisa
So, some of the organizations that I know are out there, everything from Black Girls Code to thinking about the afro tech to the disability inclusion network. Also thinking about the gay times, that's a new organization thinking about LGBTQ plus work in the Metaverse, we also have DG Jixi, which is an organization working with girls here at NYU, we have the largest female founder’s organization in the United States coming out of our higher education institution. And then we also have our diversity founder’s organization. So, this goes back to that idea of the new different, let's do things differently. If we're going to create, we talked about a lot in the diversity and inclusion world about belonging. And if we're going to create sites of belonging, then what we have to do is also create sites of innovation or debate, and innovative ideas can be hashed out to create better new products. And that will help us to attain sustainable goals.

If we can think about the Metaverse, we can reimagine the right access to water. Just think about access to water alone and salad nation. And if we brought together places like Abu Dhabi, with places like South Africa, with places like California, where they're experiencing water challenges, that global input and bring people together to think about how we imagine that we can reimagine not just the dairy farm, but the Metaverse. Lastly, what I'll say is here at NYU, what we've been doing is we've created a couple of new initiatives. And one of those initiatives, and this is again to concretize. I've given you those 10 steps. But to put it into practice, what we did was we collected a lot of data, a lot of organizations collect data about where they are in terms of innovation, technology, diversity, and inclusion. We did that.

And then what I did was to think about, well, how are we going to use those data? So, we created a new initiative called NYU be together, and we created 42 incubation groups. So, they're just groups across researchers, faculty, students, external people, and our alumni, to create new ideas. We've got hackathons, Broadway shows new games being created all kinds of things, and they're multigenerational, meaning we have people in those groups who are 16 to 80. And bridging that divide, thinking about leadership and growth. So, we are encouraging all of you out there to think about how you engage people as we create the new world, new global future, the future of work, AI, VR, all of the new technologies, and you got to say robotics here because robotics of the future will lead us into all kinds of new ways of doing and thinking.

So, I just would like to say, as we think about those 10 concrete steps and concretizing this work, please just think about how you can think about you can take two steps and phase steps across time as we think about leadership development. And again, thank you to the organizers of this conference, and thank you to everyone here today for taking these 10 minutes to listen to me. As I talk about this world. You can find me on LinkedIn if you have additional questions. I do say this is Lisa Coleman, Ph.D., there's another Lisa Coleman out there, who's a little bit of a superstar. She's a singer. So, you can get confused if you look for me there. So, thank you, again, Angelica, and thank you to the entire WHERS Team.

Final Considerations

Angelica Sharygina
Doctor Lisa, this is fascinating. I was listening to you on the stand concrete steps. Just it’s breathtaking. Like, it takes my mind away. Because you're talking about a future that will be different when you were talking about a new norm. And many people saw that norm, but what is the norm, we didn't have a norm yet. We didn't have that. And you must address this because what was happening before COVID, it's not the norm. And COVID only actually broadens that gap, broadens that divide, and talks about the digital divide students across the world, in regions that are in crisis, have lost two years in education, we have a problem that needs to be addressed.

And what you're talking about is fascinating because bridging that gap through Metaverse through technology, through innovation, but at the same time focusing on interconnection partnerships for the goals and inclusivity. And we were talking about the huge talent pool that is being disregarded. And when you look at African countries or countries crisis-torn by war, there's huge potential for those young people for those people that are affected directly by the war, by the crisis by lack of resources, but what we can do as educators as academics, as leaders, is to give them the not just give them the helping hands but give them the tools. Thank you so much for giving your perspective on this I do believe that the future will be right and thank you so much for everything you're doing to build that inclusive and diverse society across the globe.

Prof Lisa
Thank you so much Angelica as I say if we're going to create sustainable products and a sustainable world we're going to have to work together and as we try to reach these SDGs and think about the sustainability of all of us right working together we're going to have to think about equity inclusion, inclusion and exactly what you said tapping into this immense global talent that is available and we have a great opportunity here. Thank you again Angelica and thank you to your entire team have a wonderful day and evening, year.
