Prof. Wajih Owais Bio

Prof. Wajih Owais is a distinguished Jordanian scientist and educator, currently serving as a Senator in the Jordanian House of Senate. With a remarkable career spanning several decades, he has made significant contributions to higher education, scientific research, and public policy in Jordan.

Prof. Owais holds the esteemed position of Professor of Genetics at Yarmouk University. His academic journey began with a B.Sc. in Biology from the American University of Beirut in 1972, followed by an M.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Jordan in 1975. In 1979, he achieved his Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of California, Davis, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to the field.

Throughout his career, Prof. Owais has held various administrative roles at prominent public universities in Jordan. Notably, he served as the Dean of the Yarmouk University Faculty of Science from 1994 to 1998, Vice-President of Jordan University of Science and Technology from 1998 to 2003, and as the President of Jordan University of Science and Technology from 2003 to 2011.

As a prolific scholar, Prof. Owais has authored over 35 scientific papers published in international journals. He has also provided guidance and mentorship to more than 45 graduate students, nurturing the next generation of scientific talent.

His dedication to scientific advancement extends beyond academia. Prof. Owais is an active member of several scientific societies, including the Environmental Mutagen Society in the United States and the Jordanian Biological Society. His contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the "Commemorative Medal" by the Czech University of Agriculture, Prague, and an honorary "Doctor of Science" bestowed upon him by the New York Institute of Technology.
